The government has announced new measures to curb perennial flooding in the capital, Accra, following recent flooding that destroyed several properties and claimed lives.
"Ultimately, the other solution will be to decongest Accra. What we are planning is to move some of the city out — that is, major government departments — and so create a new centre of growth so that people will start building in the new city," President John Mahama announced.
The President and security capos embarked on an aerial tour after the heavy downpour on June 29, 2026, and have now come out with this long-term solution to the annual flooding in the capital.
"We'll call a National Security Council meeting and we will be asking every district to identify, together with the Works and Housing Ministry, where the blockages and the channels are as they pass through the district assemblies, so that we can earmark those for removal," the President said.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces added, "But that's a long-term solution."
"Whenever government begins removing structures built in waterways, some people accuse us of being inhumane," President John Dramani Mahama said, expressing sympathy to those who have lost their properties.
The President also thanked all the security agencies for the work done to rescue lives.
