Outspoken foot soldiers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have declared that even imprisonment will not stop Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, from serving the party and winning the National Chairmanship.
Addressing journalists, the group alleged that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is seeking to jail Chairman Wontumi to derail his bid to lead the NPP.
“If they think jailing Chairman Wontumi will stop his march to the National Chairmanship, then they should think again. Even if he is serving a prison sentence at Nsawam, we will vote massively for him. Nothing will stop us from making him our next National Chairman,” one spokesperson said.
The group said Chairman Wontumi currently enjoys overwhelming grassroots support and is widely tipped to win the party’s forthcoming national executive elections.
“We are not afraid of the NDC—not today and not tomorrow. We dare them to carry out their alleged plans and see the reaction from the grassroots of the NPP,” they added.
The foot soldiers also accused the NDC of hypocrisy in the fight against illegal mining.
They argued that while the NDC campaigned to tackle galamsey and criticised the previous Akufo-Addo administration, some individuals associated with the party have faced allegations or investigations over illegal mining since assuming office.
