The report indicates that president John Dramani Mahama’s decision to nominate Kenneth Gilbert Adjei as Ghana’s new Minister for Defence marks the return of a familiar face to a ministry where he previously served during the President’s first administration.
It further notes that mr Adjei, who has been serving as Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, has been reassigned to replace Dr Edward Omane Boamah, one of President Mahama’s closest political allies, who died in the tragic military helicopter crash of August 6, 2025.
The appointment comes almost exactly a year after the accident, during which the Defence Ministry has been overseen in an acting capacity by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.
Although some observers have questioned Mr Adjei’s nomination or suggested alternative candidates, the incoming Defence Minister, if approved, is no newcomer to Ghana’s security establishment.
He previously served as Deputy Minister for Defence between 2015 and 2016 under President Mahama, until the NPP took over, giving him first-hand experience of the ministry he is now returning to lead.
During that period, he was involved in initiatives aimed at improving military accommodation and contributed to defence policy and strategy at a time when Ghana, like many countries in the sub-region, faced evolving security challenges.
His earlier tenure means he assumes office with an understanding of the structure, operations and strategic priorities of the Defence Ministry.
Beyond his previous experience in government, Mr Adjei also possesses an academic background directly related to national security.
In 2022, he completed a Master of Arts in Peace, Security and Intelligence Management at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), where he graduated as the best student in his cohort.
The programme focuses on security policy, intelligence management, conflict resolution and strategic decision-making, areas that align closely with the responsibilities of a Defence Minister.
He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), an Executive MBA from the University of Ghana, and was active in the National Democratic Congress’ student wing, TEIN, during his university years.
Mr Adjei was appointed Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources in February 2025, where he has overseen policies relating to water resources, housing and public infrastructure.
His tenure has coincided with efforts to address Ghana’s water supply challenges, improve housing infrastructure and strengthen public works.
His reassignment to Defence now places him at the centre of one of the country’s most sensitive ministries at a time of heightened regional security concerns and ongoing efforts to modernise the Ghana Armed Forces.
