The report indicates that former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Awentami Afoko, has pledged to lead the party back to government in the 2028 general election if he is re-elected as National Chairman.
It further notes that mr Afoko expressed confidence that the NPP could regain the trust of Ghanaians, insisting that the party remained capable of returning to power through unity, discipline and a strengthened grassroots structure.
Speaking in an interview Akoma in Kumasi on Thursday, August 6, Mr Afoko stated his decision to seek a return as National Chairman followed extensive consultations with party elders, former and current national executives, Members of Parliament, regional executives, as well as youth, women and grassroots groups across the country.
According to him, the engagements indicated widespread concern about the party’s current state but also a strong belief that it could overcome its challenges under purposeful leadership.
Mr Afoko stated his campaign would be anchored on what he described as the “Three Rs” — Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture.
He explained that reuniting the party would involve healing divisions, restoring trust and promoting inclusiveness, while rebuilding would focus on strengthening party structures, empowering grassroots members and ensuring all organs of the party function effectively.
Speaking during the interview, Mr Afoko stated these measures would position the NPP to recapture political power by restoring public confidence and presenting the party as a united, disciplined and credible alternative ready to govern.
He also appealed to delegates to support his candidature, promising transparent, inclusive and selfless leadership that would place the interests of the party above personal ambition.
He further urged members to uphold the values of sacrifice, commitment and service, stressing that unity remained the surest path to returning the NPP to government.
