The report indicates that minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that Ghana’s revised basic school curriculum, which introduces coding, artificial intelligence (AI), electronics and technical and vocational education and training (TVET), will be presented to the Ministry of Education this week.
It further notes that speaking at the Government’s Accountability Series on Monday, July 20, the Minister stated the revised curriculum, covering kindergarten to junior high school (JHS), is one of the government’s major education reforms and is aimed at equipping learners with skills needed for the future.
According to him, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) was tasked with reviewing the curriculum to better prepare pupils for a technology-driven world.
“One of the most significant decisions we took as government was to revise our education curriculum, and the agency responsible is NaCCA. They were asked to revise our education curriculum from kindergarten to junior high school,” he said.
The Minister stated that the revised curriculum would be formally presented to the Ministry of Education on Wednesday before being submitted to President John Mahama for approval and subsequently to Cabinet and Parliament for consideration.
“I’m happy to note that on Wednesday, a revised curriculum from kindergarten to junior high school will be presented formally to the Ministry of Education for onward submission to the President and for the policy to go to Cabinet and Parliament,” he stated.
He stated the review is intended to strengthen science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education through the introduction of new learning areas.
“The revision of our curriculum is to ensure a Smart Start curriculum for greater integration of technology, science, engineering, and mathematics. We have promised to introduce coding, electronics, artificial intelligence, and TVET into the basic education curriculum. And this will be the new addition,” he said.
Beyond technology-focused subjects, the Minister stated the revised curriculum would place greater emphasis on ethics, patriotism and civic responsibility to help shape responsible citizens.
“More importantly, ethics, ethical values, how the child grows up, knowing what the state resources are, knowing how to be patriotic and responsible, and knowing how to be civically responsible will be an integral part of our revised curriculum,” Mr Iddrisu said.
The Minister also highlighted efforts to strengthen basic education through increased funding, saying the government has improved the capitation grant and is ensuring its timely release to schools.
He added that payments have already been made to beneficiaries, with details expected to be provided as part of the Ministry’s presentation.
“At the basic education level, we have done some spending, improving the capitation grant and ensuring that it’s released in a timely. We have made some payments to beneficiaries of over 5,681,000,” he said.
